About Dr. Cory Messerschmidt

“Building a physician-patient relationship means understanding their concerns and their goals, and helping patients get back to doing what they love. If we work together, we can accomplish those goals.”

At the Orthopaedic Specialists practice, renowned for hip and knee replacement, Dr. Cory A. Messerschmidt works with patients to preserve and maintain joint health, providing personalized shoulder, hip and knee procedures using the most advanced surgical techniques. Fellowship trained in sports medicine, he also provides preventative and rehabilitative care to patients who have developed injuries related to physical activity.

Areas of Expertise

  • Arthroscopic Surgery — A minimally invasive surgical procedure to diagnose and treat a joint’s structural problems using a long, thin tube with a camera on the end.
  • Robot-Assisted Hip and Knee Replacement — The use of surgeon-guided robotic arms to assist in replacing hip and knee joints, resulting in increased precision and shorter recovery time.
  • Sports Medicine — Care focusing on the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries related to sports and physical activity.
  • Shoulder Replacement — Care focusing on the prevention and rehabilitation of injuries related to sports and physical activity.
  • Hand and Wrist — Treatment of musculoskeletal conditions of the hand and wrist.

Background

Dr. Messerschmidt built an interest in medicine in high school, volunteering at a hometown emergency room in Virginia with his father. In college, he knew he’d found his calling after shadowing an orthopedic surgeon at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., and said it was an experience he’ll “never forget.”

During his sports medicine fellowship at Emory University, he worked alongside professional sports teams such as the Atlanta Falcons and NCAA collegiate teams like Georgia Tech. In Thomasville, Ga., he also worked with high school athletes as a team physician.

Dr. Messerschmidt and his wife Dominique have two children and a dog and are excited to call Beaufort home. They enjoy playing pickleball, golf and tennis, spending time outdoors, and traveling whenever possible.
