Veronica Smalheiser is a board-certified adult nurse practitioner with wide-ranging experience, joining Beaufort Memorial Lowcountry Medical Group Primary Care in 2015. She provides adult patients with assessment, diagnosis and treatment of chronic and acute illnesses.
Mrs. Smalheiser, who holds additional certification as a critical care nurse, and both an adult-gerontology and a cardiovascular nurse practitioner, specializes in gerontology and the management of heart diseases and risk factors.
Areas of Expertise
- Adult Primary Care — Preventive care and treatment of minor illnesses and injuries and structured treatment programs for chronic disease.
- Geriatric Medicine — The medical specialty devoted to treating older adults and the unique physical and psychological concerns that can accompany aging.
- Chronic Disease Management — Helping patients with chronic conditions such high blood pressure, high cholesterol, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetes manage their conditions and remain healthy.
- General Cardiology — Treatment of common medical conditions of the heart.
- Cosmetic Botox Injections — A minimally invasive, non-surgical procedure that injects small amounts of a cosmetic form of botulinum toxin used to relax facial muscles to eliminate fine lines and wrinkles.
Background
She began her nursing career in 2007 at University of Florida Health in Jacksonville. She joined Beaufort Memorial in 2010, working for five years as a nurse in the Emergency Department while working for four of those in the hospital’s Radiology Department and cath lab. She also worked with patients as an adult nurse practitioner for the Bridge to Home Transitional Care Program at Beaufort Memorial.
Mrs. Smalheiser and her husband, Stuart – a cardiologist at Beaufort Memorial Heart Specialists – have one son. She enjoys cooking, jogging and traveling in her free time.

Out of the White Coat: Veronica Smalheiser
From the time they were kids, Veronica Smalheiser and her sister, Crystal, have been best friends. Just 13 months apart, the siblings are so close that when Smalheiser and her husband, cardiologist Stuart Smalheiser, MD, left her hometown of Jacksonville to work at Beaufort Memorial Hospital, her younger sister soon followed.
