Dr. Kelsey Mijares brings a passion for the dynamic field of internal medicine to Beaufort Memorial Palmetto Medical Group. She specializes in the management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and obesity as well as thyroid disease, and brings an understanding, patient-first approach to primary care at the Bluffton office.

• Obesity Medicine — A field of medicine that looks at and works with the behaviors, environment, genetics, nutrition, physiology and psychosocial issues that contribute to obesity.
• Diabetes — A chronic condition characterized by abnormally high levels of glucose, or sugar, in the blood that affects how the body turns food into energy and can cause damage to the heart, nerves, kidneys or eyes.
• Metabolic Syndrome — A group of conditions that, combined, raise your overall risk of coronary heart disease, diabetes, stroke and other health problems.
• Hypertension — Elevated blood pressure that, over time, can cause the heart to work overtime and pump harder, possibly leading to heart attack, stroke, heart failure or kidney failure.
• Thyroid Disorders — A variety of conditions that can result in the body’s production of too little thyroid hormone or too much, affecting metabolism, bone health, heart rate and other functions.

Background

Dr. Mijares always saw herself in the medical field, having spent a great deal of time in her youth around healthcare professionals due to her father’s health issues. Originally interested in being a surgeon, Dr. Mijares shifted her focus toward the more family-friendly, diverse field of internal medicine.

She completed her residency in Internal Medicine at Memorial Health in Savannah, Ga., and led research initiatives focused on glucose monitoring, hypertension and the prevention of cardiovascular disease. She emphasizes the importance of a healthy diet and active lifestyle with her patients to combat chronic conditions.

As parents of three, Dr. Mijares and her husband José keep busy. She enjoys running and yoga and is a barre enthusiast and former instructor.
