A board-certified specialist in internal medicine, Dr. Russell Williams brings more than 30 years of experience to Beaufort Memorial Primary Care. He specializes in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic illness in adults.
Areas of Expertise
- Diabetes – A disease in which the body does not properly produce or use insulin, resulting in abnormally high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood.
- Hypertension – A common condition, known as high blood pressure, that affects the body's arteries with serious consequences if not treated.
- COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) – A chronic inflammatory lung disease that causes obstructed airflow from the lungs and is typically caused by long-term exposure to irritating gases or particulate matter, most often cigarette smoke.
- Asthma – A respiratory condition that can make breathing difficult, trigger coughing and cause shortness of breath when airways in the lungs are inflamed.
- Preventive Care – Regularly scheduled medical visits intended to help detect or prevent serious disease and manage chronic conditions.
Video Visits
Dr. Williams offers virtual visits for patients needing medication checks, standard chronic illness management, sick visits and follow up care for certain conditions. If interested, ask about the option when scheduling.
Background
Originally from Colorado, Dr. Williams made his way to the south in pursuit of his medical degree. Upon completion of his residency program at the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, he has practiced mostly in Columbia.
Dr. Williams joined Beaufort Memorial Primary Care in 2023 after 12 years of providing care for patients in a West Columbia clinic that was designed to offer a medical home for the uninsured. Prior to that he cared for patients in a variety of settings, including skilled nursing facilities, hospitals and outpatient practices.
Dr. Williams and his wife, Cynthia, a registered nurse, are no strangers to the Lowcountry lifestyle. They love the Beaufort area and previously had a home on Daufuskie Island. Dr. Williams especially enjoys exploring the outdoors with nature photography, hiking and fishing, whenever he gets the chance.
