Orthopedic Conditions We Treat

Our orthopedic specialists address a wide range of common orthopedic conditions that can impact any joint in your body, from your shoulders to your shins. If you've experienced a sports injury or another orthopedic issue, we’ll work diligently to find the best treatment tailored for you.

Some of the conditions we commonly address include:

  • Hip pain — Hip pain can be caused by various factors, from arthritis to tendinitis. We treat conditions like hip impingement, which can limit your range of motion and is a significant cause of osteoarthritis. We also address torn labrums, which affect the cushioning of the hip socket, and loose fragments of cartilage inside the joint, often resulting from an injury.
  • Knee pain — Common knee conditions include ACL and other ligament injuries, chondromalacia (wearing or injury of knee cartilage cushion), loose bone fragments and/or cartilage in the knee and torn meniscus (an injury to the cartilage between the thighbone and shinbone). We can also help determine the cause of specific issues like knee pain when going down stairs.
  • Shoulder pain — Our specialists treat rotator cuff tears, shoulder impingement syndrome and shoulder instability, including torn labrums. Back and neck pain — Your spine can be the source of chronic back pain, limb weakness and walking difficulties. We address conditions like sciatica, pinched nerves in the neck and spinal stenosis.
  • Sports injuries — From stress fractures and ankle sprains to more complex issues like torn rotator cuffs and knee ligament injuries, our sports medicine specialists can help you get back in the game.
  • Elbow pain — Elbow joint specialists at Beaufort Memorial treat a range of general procedures to address elbow conditions, including tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow.
  • Ankle and foot pain — Board-certified podiatry specialists provide general procedures for ankle and foot issues, such as plantar fasciitis.

Nonsurgical Treatments

Many orthopedic problems can be effectively managed without surgery. Our nonsurgical options include:

  • Injections such as corticosteroids, gel injections (viscosupplementation, hyaluronic acid) and platelet-rich plasma injections help to alleviate pain and inflammation
  • Lifestyle changes, which include activity modifications and weight management, to support joint health
  • Over-the-counter pain relievers to help you manage discomfort and other prescribed medications that help address more severe pain and inflammation
  • The RICE method, which stands for “Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation” to prevent further injury and reduce swelling
  • Physical therapy to strengthen muscles, improve flexibility and help prevent future injuries Other nonsurgical options include bracing and anti-inflammatory medications.

Minimally Invasive Procedures

When conservative treatments are no longer enough, our board-certified orthopedic surgeons specialize in a range of minimally invasive surgical approaches designed to reduce trauma, shorten recovery times and provide lasting relief.

In the Beaufort Memorial Advanced Orthopedics & Spine Program, we are proud to offer leading-edge technology such as Mako Robotic-Arm Assisted Surgery and VELYS, which improve precision and outcomes for joint replacement procedures. We use some of today's most advanced technologies, which use 3D modeling for greater precision during your procedure to ensure you receive the most advanced care available.

  • Arthroscopic surgery — This minimally invasive procedure allows our surgeons to diagnose and treat joint injuries using a small camera called an arthroscope, requiring only tiny incisions. This often means less pain, faster recovery and a quicker return to your daily activities. Arthroscopy is frequently performed on an outpatient basis, allowing you to recover comfortably at home the same day. It can be used for various conditions, including some common causes of arthritis, potentially helping you avoid a joint replacement later in life. Our surgeons perform arthroscopy for conditions of the knee (such as ACL reconstruction, meniscus tears, loose fragments, patellar instability) and shoulder (including rotator cuff repair, impingement, torn labrums, biceps issues and shoulder instability).
  • Hip replacement — This procedure replaces diseased or worn-out bone ends with artificial components, effectively increasing hip function and mobility while reducing pain. Beaufort Memorial offers the latest techniques, including direct superior, anterior and posterior approaches, chosen based on your individual health and needs.
  • Knee replacement — When nonsurgical treatments are no longer effective, our board-certified orthopedic surgeons can repair injured or worn knee joints with artificial partial or total joint replacement to restore mobility and alleviate pain.
  • Spine surgeries — Our spine specialists perform procedures that reduce pain, spare healthy tissue and ease recovery. These can include spinal decompression surgery for chronic back pain, limb weakness, or walking problems and cervical disc replacement surgery for chronic neck and nerve pain.
  • Shoulder replacement — We offer traditional replacement, reverse replacement and robotically-assisted shoulder replacement for complex conditions.

Sports Medicine

If a sports injury has sidelined you, our board-certified, fellowship-trained orthopedic and sports medicine specialists are ready to help you return to the physical activities you love. We understand that the sudden movements, powerful exertion and repetitive motions in sports can lead to various injuries.

Our sports medicine services cover a broad spectrum of care, addressing common sports-related injuries such as stress fractures, ankle sprains, torn rotator cuffs and knee ligament injuries. We always explore nonsurgical treatment options first, including:

  • Oral and topical medications
  • Injections
  • Physical therapy
  • Bracing

Should more intensive treatment be needed, our sports medicine physicians may recommend procedures such as arthroscopy, cast immobilization, manipulation under anesthesia, surgical treatment, or traction to relieve pressure on the spine.
