Welcome to Collins Birthing Center
The Collins Birthing Center is named in memory of Beaufort’s most revered obstetrician, Dr. Earnest S. Collins, and supported through the generosity of his wife, Sue Collins, and hundreds of community donors. Inside you’ll find an experience as special as the people who helped create it.

Antepartum rooms for easy check-in
Most women start their stay in one of our four antepartum rooms, featuring all-private beds and a comfy recliner for quick and efficient testing. Your nursing team will start monitoring your infant’s heart rate and the frequency of your contractions. Your obstetrician or nurse-midwife may check on you here as well.
We’ll also complete your hospital registration for you right at the bedside, so you can just relax and settle in.

Skill and experience to meet your needs
The heart of the Collins Birthing Center is our 24/7 nursing staff. Our team includes more than 50 experienced nurses — offering 100 years’ worth of wisdom and compassion on every shift!
We want you to feel completely cared for throughout your stay, making every effort to honor your wishes and any special requests.

Labor and delivery rooms that feel like home
Get ready for your baby’s debut in one of our eight private labor and delivery rooms (LDRs).
Rooms have been designed for your total safety and comfort, with your own bathroom plus state-of-the-art technology to monitor you and your baby. We also have 24/7 in-house anesthesia to ease your labor, along with aromatherapy diffusers on request. In the event of a necessary or scheduled C-section, you can rest easy knowing our dedicated OR is right across the hallway.
-
Bond with your baby right away
Our maternity team encourages skin-to-skin bonding immediately following birth, including “kangaroo care”, where your baby is placed in an upright position against your bare chest. Throughout your stay, we also keep you and your precious together as much as possible, though you can request time in the nursery whenever you need to rest.
-
Special care for early arrivals
Should your baby arrive prematurely or need specialized care, peace of mind is just down the hall. The Birthing Center, a Level II Nursery, is staffed 24/7 with nurses specially trained to care for the needs of these infants, including breathing and feeding support.
We also care for babies who no longer require the intensive level of care at Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC Health) in Charleston but aren’t strong enough to go home. By transferring back here to our nursery, we can provide ongoing care for your baby and keep you closer to home and family. -
A peaceful postpartum experience
You did it! Now it’s time to rest, recover and enjoy some family bonding in one of our 12 fresh and spacious postpartum rooms. A gorgeous Lowcountry mural creates a serene setting, along with sconces on either side of the bed that let you adjust the lighting to suit your needs. Rooms are equipped with new recliners and gliders if you need to soothe your newborn.

Special accommodations for your spouse or partner
