Beaufort Memorial has named Tommy Harmon Jr., a longtime healthcare and business leader with decades of governance and finance experience, as the new chair of its Board of Trustees.

Harmon succeeds former chair William “Bill” Himmelsbach and brings decades of healthcare governance experience to his new role. He spent nearly 15 years serving on the board of Southwestern Vermont Healthcare in Bennington, where he was finance committee chair before transitioning to board chairman for five years and Trustee Emeritus in 2022.

Prior to joining the Beaufort Memorial Board of Trustees in 2024, he served as a director of Broad River Healthcare and the finance committee for the Beaufort Memorial Board.

Harmon holds a bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the former owner, CEO and Chairman of the Board for Sonnax Industries, Inc., a leading supplier of transmission components for vehicles worldwide.

The Mooresville, North Carolina, native spent nearly 30 years in Vermont before retiring to Spring Island with his wife, Diane, in 2023.

The nine-member Beaufort Memorial Board of Trustees governs the nonprofit health system and is appointed by the Beaufort County Council. Board meeting agendas and minutes can be found on the Beaufort County website.
