A multi-million-dollar surgical pavilion upgrade is currently underway at Beaufort Memorial, highlighting the impact of critical federal funds on expanding innovative, state-of-the-art care in the Lowcountry.

On Thursday, April 2, representatives from the Office of U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham visited the construction site, touring renovated operating suites and hearing about the project’s impact from Beaufort Memorial leaders.

The $25 million, five-phase renovation and expansion project was made possible in part with $17.9 million in federal funding secured by Sen. Graham as a part of the 2022 Omnibus Bill passed to provide support for critical infrastructure projects nationwide.

“We take our responsibility as stewards of federal funding very seriously. These investments aren’t just about our facilities, but they’re about expanding access to care in this community,” said Beaufort Memorial President and CEO Russell Baxley. “For a community health system like Beaufort Memorial, federal support like this plays a vital role in ensuring we can meet the growing and evolving needs of the Lowcountry.”

In September 2023, Beaufort Memorial held a “wallbreaking” onsite to commemorate the renovation’s start. Graham, as well as Beaufort Memorial leadership and surgical staff, celebrated the start of a project that, once completed, would have a profound, lasting impact on patients in the community.

“I believe the expansion of the Beaufort Memorial Hospital operating rooms to accommodate specialized surgeries is a worthy and necessary endeavor, and I was pleased to have delivered $17.9 million in federal funding to help make this project possible,” said Sen. Graham. “Upon completion, patients will be able to get the specialized care they need right here in Beaufort. Out of this project, lives will be saved and transformed, representing a prudent investment of public resources.”

Once completed, the renovated surgical pavilion will include the addition of two advanced surgical suites, as well as the expansion of existing suites to accommodate new technologies and optimize the surgical process. The pre- and post-operative care areas will also be upgraded to streamline patient flow.

“This project is a clear example of how strategic federal investment can transform healthcare in a community like ours,” Baxley said. “We are committed to using these funds to build not just for today, but for the future, allowing this health system to continue delivering advanced, lifesaving care for generations to come.”

The project is preparing to enter its fourth phase and is scheduled to be completed in Summer 2027.
