Beaufort Memorial Launches Emergency Medicine Residency Program with MUSC
September 15, 2025
Beaufort Memorial will be welcoming Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Emergency Medicine (EM) residents every four weeks at the Pratt Emergency Center, further deepening its commitment to excellent patient care.
On Aug. 1, seasoned, third-year residents began rotating through the Beaufort Memorial Hospital ER as a part of their advanced clinical training.
This residency program welcomes one EM resident on a recurring schedule every four weeks. These physicians, who have chosen to practice emergency medicine and have already completed two years of advanced training in the specialty, will be integrated into the hospital’s clinical teams, gaining hands-on experience as they enter their final year of training. The residents are welcome additions to the current ER medical staff, offering an additional provider to the regularly scheduled team and completing their emergency medicine training in Beaufort Memorial’s community setting.
“We are excited to welcome these physicians, who are bringing their recent experience with cutting-edge clinical training at MUSC, providing additional support for the hardworking medical staff at the Beaufort Memorial ER,” said Beaufort Memorial Pratt Emergency Center Medical Director Saeed Rehman, M.D. “Emergency medicine is a critical specialty. These residents will serve the Lowcountry community alongside our current staff, further strengthening our capabilities as an emergency care center.”
Leading the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Beaufort Memorial is Luke Baxley, M.D., who is bringing his strong leadership, a passion for medical education and a deep commitment to the development of the program.
“This program represents Beaufort Memorial’s investment in the community and contributes to a stronger pipeline for much-needed emergency medicine physicians here,” Baxley said. “These are potential future Beaufort Memorial ER physicians, and Beaufort Memorial’s community setting is a great place for these residents to complete their training.”
As of Aug. 1, Beaufort Memorial Hospital is officially a site that provides Graduate Medical Education as a result of the organization’s ongoing affiliation with MUSC Health. This long-standing relationship continues to aid in recruiting specialists to the market. The program will create recruitment opportunities as the Bluffton Community Hospital nears completion.
“These programs train highly skilled physicians who excel in clinical practice and are committed to advancing health care outcomes in their communities,” said Tsveti Markova, M.D., MUSC Health chief academic integration officer. “Our residents will be well-prepared to serve South Carolina, particularly in rural and underserved areas where their expertise is most needed.”
These residents graduated from medical schools across the country, including programs at West Virginia, A.T. Still and Temple Universities, before selecting the EM residency program with MUSC.
