Are you looking for additional primary care options? Direct Primary Care (DPC) and concierge medicine present distinctive yet complementary approaches to healthcare, each with its own set of benefits. While they both strive to elevate the patient experience and offer personalized care, they also have notable differences that set them apart.

“Traditional primary care provides essential medical services to help you maintain good health,” says Chris Ketchie, vice president of physician services at Beaufort Memorial. “DPC and concierge medicine are two options that offer many of the same essential services as traditional primary care but differ in their approach and cost.”

What Is Concierge Medicine?

Concierge medicine, also known as concierge care, is a personalized healthcare model that provides 24/7 access to primary care services, enabling patients to receive care beyond normal business hours. This level of accessibility can be particularly beneficial if you need immediate assistance from your primary care provider or have a busy schedule.

In addition to standard primary care services, some concierge medicine practices also offer specialty or subspecialty care, allowing patients to receive comprehensive treatment options in areas such as:

With this model, your care provider can spend significantly more time with you during appointments, ensuring a more thorough and tailored approach to your healthcare needs.

What Is Direct Primary Care?

Direct Primary Care makes proactive, preventive healthcare accessible and affordable. This service is offered through contracted employers. If your employer participates, you can trust DPC for all your primary care needs. In some instances, you can make same-day appointments through your membership.

Covered services in DPC include:

  • Annual physicals and select laboratory services
  • Cancer screenings
  • Diagnostic testing and treatment of flu, sinus infection and other acute illnesses
  • In-person or telemedicine visits
  • Management of diabetes, heart disease, asthma and other chronic conditions
  • Annual flu vaccinations

“Direct primary care is a very powerful tool for improving and maintaining good health, particularly for those without insurance or a catastrophic plan,” Ketchie says. “The range of services is expansive, and it makes accessing care seamless.”

Cost Comparison: DPC vs. Concierge

According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, concierge medicine is more expensive than DPC. However, the differences go beyond out-of-pocket expenses.

  • Concierge costs — The cost of concierge medicine varies. Expect to pay thousands of dollars, or even tens of thousands, for membership with a concierge specialist group. This fee does not cover services. Rather, it guarantees 24/7 access to a provider. Along with your membership fee, you may need Medicare or other health insurance coverage.
  • DPC costs — Membership in the Beaufort Memorial Direct Primary Care program is available through local employers and costs $50 a month. While the membership fee covers primary care services, including an annual physical and up to 30 sick or video visits per year at our primary care practices, patients may still incur additional costs for services provided outside the practice. This includes expenses for specialist care, emergency room visits, imaging, pathology, telemedicine, medications and certain laboratory testing.

“With this area’s growing need for primary care services and limited number of providers, the need for concierge medicine and DPC will only continue to grow,” Ketchie says. “For the right person, these services are a great way to access care when you need it, whether you’re healthy or sick.”

Concierge Medicine and Direct Primary Care: Determine What’s Right for You

By paying a yearly fee, you can access quality medical care through concierge medicine or Direct Primary Care. Choosing between them depends on your needs and financial situation.

  1. With these membership-based medical services, you may gain faster, better access to healthcare providers than is otherwise possible.
  2. Concierge medicine offers exclusive 24/7 access at a higher price point, while DPC is an affordable $50 per month (except for certain specialty services), and these alternative healthcare options help make essential health services more easily accessible.
  3. Primary care providers offer comprehensive primary care through DPC, and concierge practices often offer specialty services, such as cardiology or psychiatry.
