Our Request for a Bequests

A simple bequest of any amount is a powerful way to make a lasting impact on our community's healthcare. There is some additional information available about the benefits of utilizing a charitable bequest and how bequests enable you to keep control of your assets.

Please inform us if you make a provision for the BMH Foundation so we can thank you from the bottom of our hearts, make sure your gift intentions are properly carried out and welcome you to the Kate Gleason Society. If you have not yet written a will, regardless of your charitable intent, please consider this information about wills.

Sample Bequest Language:

Beaufort Memorial Hospital Endowment Foundation, Tax ID # 57-0792360

I give, devise and bequeath [identify here a specific sum of money, specific asset, or a portion of the remainder of your estate] to Beaufort Memorial Hospital Endowment Foundation, P.O. Box 2233, Beaufort, SC 29901, to be used for the benefit of Beaufort Memorial Hospital, 955 Ribaut Road, Beaufort, SC 29902, in such a manner as the Foundation Board of Trustees thereof may direct.

Charitable Gift Annuities

A charitable trust or annuity can be established that provides immediate benefits to the donor and, at the same time, supports BMH programs and services.

Qualified Charitable Distributions from your IRA

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow individuals age 70½ and older to make tax-free donations directly from an IRA to a qualified charity, potentially satisfying all or part of their annual Required Minimum Distributions (RMDs).

How a QCD works:
-    Contact your IRA plan administrator to make a gift distribution directly from your IRA to the BMH Foundation.  Note - QCD’s must only come from your IRA, and not from another tax deferred plan like a 401(k) or from a 403(b).
-    The gift distribution from your IRA will be directly transferred to the BMH Foundation.
-    A QCD gift results in no income to you and lowers taxable income by the amount of the QCD.  A QCD does not qualify for a charitable deduction.

Benefits of a QCD:
-    Avoids taxes on QCD gift distributions of up to $108,000 (for tax year 2025) annually from your IRA to the BMH Foundation and other charities.
-    Helps satisfy your required minimum distribution (RMD) for the year.
-    Reduces your taxable income, even if you do not itemize deductions.  If you take the standard deduction, a QCD can be a very effective way to reduce your total tax.
-    Makes a gift that is not subject to the deduction limits on charitable gifts.

Insurance Policies

A simple way to make a special gift is by naming the Foundation as a beneficiary of an IRA, 401k, or Life Insurance Policy. With a single form, you can allocate a percent or amount to be disbursed to the Foundation upon payout.

Real Estate

A gift of land and/or a house provides an enhanced tax advantage for donors or their heirs.

Personal Property

Items such as art or vehicles that have appraised values may be donated to the BMH Foundation.

Gift Planning Assistance

Beaufort Memorial Hospital can provide expert gift-planning assistance to individuals planning to support the BMH Foundation. This service encourages exploring philanthropic goals and capabilities that coincide with personal financial goals and considerations. The service can augment, but not replace, the donor’s own financial and legal advisors.
