Beaufort Memorial Welcomes Radiation Oncologist, Strengthening Cancer Care Services

Beaufort Memorial is continuing to expand cancer services with the addition of experienced, board-certified radiation oncologist Dr. Glenn Mieszkalski, who will see patients in Beaufort and Okatie.

Dr. Mieszkalski brings decades of experience to Beaufort Memorial Radiation Oncology, treating patients with a wide range of cancers – including prostate, breast, lung, head, neck and rectal.

He sees patients at both the Keyserling Cancer Center, located in Beaufort, and the New River Cancer Center in Okatie.

At the practice, Dr. Mieszkalski will use external-beam radiation to treat a range of cancers, delivering focused external radiation beams to shrink or destroy tumors.

A native of New Jersey and a longtime Pennsylvania physician, Dr. Mieszkalski was always interested in science and engineering, but found that he was drawn to connection and patient care after being inspired by a family friend who was a pediatrician.

After earning his medical degree from Drexel University in Philadelphia, Pa., his clinical focus shifted from the field of internal medicine to radiation oncology. During his residency, he trained alongside leading specialists in cancer care.

Radiation therapy is one of the most common treatments for cancer with more than half of patients receiving it while on their treatment journey. No one wants to go through radiation therapy, Dr. Mieszkalski said, but he’s passionate about making sure the process is friendly and relaxed, putting patients at ease during what is often one of the most difficult periods of their lives.

His approach is collaborative with an emphasis on building relationships with his patients that often continue after they complete their cancer treatment.

“I treat every patient as if they were family, tailoring their care to their needs, educating them about their cancer and treatment and making their process as comfortable as possible,” he said.

The Lowcountry needs cancer care specialists, he added, and he’s excited to bring his diverse experience to Beaufort Memorial and serve the Beaufort and Bluffton communities as the health system expands access to these much-needed services. He and his wife are no strangers to the region: they got engaged on Hilton Head Island and since have taken many vacations – and golf trips – to the Island with their family.

The Beaufort Memorial New River Cancer Center brings all the hospital’s cancer services closer to home for patients who live in southern Beaufort County. Equipped with the state-of-the-art Varian Halcyon™ Linear Accelerator radiotherapy system, the cancer center offers access to medical and radiation oncology as well as lab, imaging, chemotherapy/infusion and breast health services.

The New River Cancer Center is located in the Beaufort Memorial Okatie Medical Pavilion at 122 Okatie Center Blvd. North, Suite 130, in Okatie. The Keyserling Cancer Center is located at 989 Ribaut Road in Beaufort.
