With our latest technology we can identify and track osteoporosis, a disease that causes bones to weaken and become brittle due to loss of bone mass. With osteoporosis, some points in the body, such as the hips, back and wrists, become vulnerable to fractures.
Until recently, this disease was difficult to diagnose in its early stages because there were no symptoms until a fracture occurred. Now, with our bone densitometry (DEXA) scan, we can screen noninvasively for osteoporosis in just 15 minutes. Our scan, which measures both the hip and the spine, is more reliable than those that measure the heel or the wrist.
During the test, you lie fully clothed on a padded table while the machine moves over your body. The bone densitometer measures the mineral content and density of bones that are most likely to fracture due to osteoporosis.
Bone density studies are recommended for all postmenopausal women. The costs are covered by most insurance plans and Medicare.
