Volunteering

Opportunities

The volunteers have many assignments throughout the hospital. The volunteer coordinator works closely with each volunteer to match the skills and interests of the volunteers with the needs of the hospital to ensure a meaningful experience for all.

Junior volunteers, who are of high school age, typically work during their summer vacations and during holidays. Junior volunteers are given the unique opportunity to obtain first-hand knowledge and experience working in the healthcare industry. Many of our junior volunteers plan to pursue a career in healthcare, while others simply enjoy the daily interaction with patients and staff.

Service areas and opportunities for volunteers include:

  • Admissions volunteers help patients sign in and provide general information regarding the hospital to patients, family members and visitors. We are looking for help in the afternoons, Monday through Friday.
  • BMH main lobby volunteers greet patients and visitors, provide directions and general information. Volunteers also assist on patient floors by transporting discharged patients to the main lobby for pick up. Volunteers staff the lobby Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are looking for help during morning and afternoon shifts.
  • BMH volunteer office volunteers receive work from various departments daily, run errands throughout the hospital, and assist with discharges. Volunteers staff the office Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. We are looking for help during morning and afternoon shifts.
  • Pastoral Care volunteers have training in the areas of providing spiritual and emotional support to patient and their families.
  • Health Information Systems/Medical Records volunteers provide general office assistance such as filing and copying.
  • Lowcountry Community Blood Center volunteers assist the center during the blood drives, call to remind donors about appointment times, and staff blood drives to offer information, giveaways, and prizes to donors following donations.
  • Patient Representative volunteers assist by visiting with patients daily, learning about the patients’ stays, and providing answers to questions and help with concerns.
  • Beaufort Medical Plaza Lobby volunteers greet and provide information to patients coming into the plaza for services. Volunteers work on projects from other departments when they are not assisting patients, and make phone calls to physicians to remind them of upcoming meetings. We are looking for help on Tuesdays and Thursdays.
  • Beaufort Medical Plaza Admissions volunteers assist with the signing in of patients, and also provide general office help to admissions staff.
  • Education Department volunteers provide assistance to staff by helping them prepare for classes and workshops.
  • Gift Shop volunteers work as cashiers and customer service representatives. We are looking for two to three volunteers to deliver items from the gift shop to patients via the “Gift Shop Cart.”
  • Human Resources volunteers provide general office help, including filing, copying and covering the reception area.
  • Safety Services volunteers provide transportation to patients and visitors around the hospital campus via golf carts. We are looking for help on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays.
  • Patient Feeding Program volunteers assist the dietary staff in delivering meals to patients. Following a brief training course in patient feeding, volunteers also assist patients who need help eating their lunches. We are looking for patient feeders from noon to 1 p.m., Monday through Friday.
