Rehabilitation Services

The Rehab Unit at BMH

The 14 bed rehabilitation facility is designed to focus on physical rehabilitation needs for patients.  Physical impairment is caused by disease, disorder or injury and these patients are called upon to develop new skills, relearn previous skills, gain knowledge and make a series of life adjustments.

Patients find that time spent in our program is different from a routine hospital stay.  We believe that caring for patients means helping them to learn to do as much as possible for themselves.  The rehabilitation process is a combination of assessment, treatment, education and follow-up. Patients participate in a daily schedule of one-on-one therapy; group therapy; community re-entry; patient and family education and goal directed activities.

Through the efforts of a multidisciplinary team, patients and families are taught the necessary skills to be empowered and gain independence.  The most important part of the multidisciplinary team is the patient.  The optimal recovery will depend on the patient’s commitment to goals, challenges and participation.

In our program, we treat patients with functional limitations resulting from:

  • Stroke
  • Brain Injury
  • Spinal cord injury
  • Amputations
  • Major multiple trauma
  • Degenerative neuromuscular disorders
  • Congenital deformities
  • Knee and hip replacements (qualified)
  • Other limiting diseases and disorders that qualify for rehabilitation

Referrals are accepted from physicians and other healthcare providers, case managers, family members and patients themselves.  Patients can be admitted from home, hospital or other types of facilities.  Following a referral, a preadmission assessment is arranged and completed at no charge.

Patients will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  • Age appropriate
  • Medically stable
  • Potential for improvement
  • Endurance to participate in a minimum of three (3) hours of daily therapy
  • Motivated and cooperative with a desire to participate
  • Has an identified discharge placement with the expectation of return to the community
  • Requires 24-hour rehabilitation nursing care and supervision by a physician specializing in rehabilitation
