Organ Donation

BMH partners with LifePoint, the non-profit Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) for organ recovery services in South Carolina, except Aiken and Edgefield counties. LifePoint actively provides organ, tissue and ocular donor services to 62 hospitals throughout the state.

Although it is not easy to discuss death and the possibility of becoming a donor, we support the process and see the value of it. Beaufort Memorial has a policy on organ donation, which is in compliance with federal and state laws, and, at the same time attempts to address the emotional and spiritual needs of all involved. (Patient Care Services Policy RI.14)

If you are an organ donor, make sure your doctor, family members and friends are aware of your wishes. Signing a donor card will not affect your medical treatment if you become ill or injured. Every lifesaving effort is made before donation is presented as an option. A transplant team is not even contacted until a patient has died and the family has consented to donation.
