Cancer Registry

In 2007 a cancer registry program was established to collect detailed data about local cancer incidence—a key to developing programs to reduce cancer risks locally and nationally.

The cancer registry is designed to collect information about the occurrence (incidence) of cancer, the types of cancers that occur and the locations within the body, the extent of the cancer at the time of diagnosis (disease stage), and the kinds of treatment that patients receive here in the Beaufort area. All local data is submitted to the South Carolina Cancer Registry and National Cancer Data Base on an annual basis.

“Nationally, registry data is critical for targeting programs focused on risk-related behaviors such as tobacco use and sun exposure, for identifying cancer screening efforts and monitoring the treatment provided to cancer patients,” says Beaufort Memorial Keyserling Cancer Center Director Connie Duke, RN.

According to Beaufort Memorial Oncology Services Medical Director Majd Chahin, MD, the Beaufort Memorial Cancer Registry also serves as a resource for physicians to stimulate research into all aspects of cancer, and promote state-of-the-art cancer diagnosis and treatment.

“The data collected through the cancer registry enables us to better understand and address the cancer burden in our area and throughout the United States,” he says.

Gloria Langston is the program’s registrar and is responsible for overall cancer data collection and management. Langston has nearly 30 years of hospital-related experience.

The cancer registry is located within the Keyserling Cancer Center.
