What is virtual colonoscopy?

Virtual colonoscopy is a less-invasive screening method for the detection of colon and rectal cancers – the third leading cause of cancer death in the U.S. Unlike traditional colonoscopy, it does not require sedation and is minimally invasive since it only requires the insertion of a small tube a few inches into the rectum to inflate the colon prior to the scan. Therefore, there is less discomfort and no recovery time, allowing patients to resume normal activities immediately following the exam.

How does it work?

Using a CT Scanner (Computed Tomography), 3D images of the colon are gathered to provide a complete picture of the colon and rectum, as well as surrounding structures in the abdomen and pelvis. This 3D scan allows the physician to look for polyps and other potential problems, including aneurysms and tumors.

How effective is virtual colonoscopy?

A December 2003 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded that “CT virtual colonoscopy with the use of a three-dimensional approach is an accurate screening method for the detection of colorectal neoplasia (growths) is asymptomatic, average-risk adults…” In addition, researchers at the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America recently concurred that virtual colonoscopy is as effective as traditional colonoscopy at detecting abnormal growths or polyps.

Who performs the test?

A radiologic technologist performs the examination using the CT scanner. The exam takes less than 30 minutes and results are interpreted by a radiologist and are discussed with your primary care or referring physician who will advise you about follow-up recommendations, if appropriate.

Where is the test performed?

\The test is performed in the Radiology Department at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Do I need a referral from my physician?

Yes. Ask your physician if virtual colonoscopy is right for you. Once you have received a physician’s order, you or your physician’s office can schedule the appointment by calling (843) 522-5015. If you have questions about virtual colonoscopy, call (843) 522-5725.

How do I prepare for virtual colonoscopy?

Preparation involves a modified diet during the 24 hours leading up to the exam, and a simple prep solution that will be prescribed by your physician.

How much does it cost?

The cost for virtual colonoscopy is $750. Full payment is required before the examination.

Is virtual colonoscopy covered by insurance?

No. Currently insurance providers are not reimbursing hospitals for the cost of the exam; therefore, the hospital will not file a claim with your insurance company. However, some insurance companies will reimburse patients directly, depending on their coverage (e.g. wellness benefits, screening benefits, etc.). Check with your insurance provider for more information.
