Calcium Scoring (via Fast CT)
Fast CT Exam
Fast CT (computerized tomography) is the
latest innovation in imaging technology, allowing a broader
range of specialized tests to a larger population. In addition,
the higher speed and better resolution of these exclusive
scanners position CT as a frontline exam, especially for arterial
and vascular imaging. Beaufort Memorial Hospital has a Siemens
fast CT scanner with a comprehensive three-dimensional reconstruction
software package.
- CT angiography, which allows the blood vessels to be viewed without
the use of a catheter. This procedure is becoming the "gold
standard" for evaluation of pulmonary emboli, renal
artery stenosis, aortic aneurysm or dissection, and tumor
staging. Access to this imaging modality may eliminate future
need for classic catheter-based angiography.
- Virtual endoscopy,
which allows viewing of the colon and bronchial tree without
having to take patients to the operating room. Through software
and image manipulation, a simple scan is adapted to videotape.
The physician observer then "flies" through the
organ or vessel, riding by or sometimes running into a tumor,
polyp or other obstruction.
- Perfusion CT,
which allows for fast evaluation and diagnosis of acute
ischemic stroke. The earlier a stroke is detected, the less
damage there is likely to be.
- Calcium scoring,
which allows high-risk patients to be tested in 15 minutes
to detect the amount of calcium plaque (hardening) they
might have in their arteries. Since 85 percent of heart
disease can be halted or prevented if discovered soon enough,
this test could be a valuable preventive tool.
