Calcium Scoring (via Fast CT)

Frequently Asked Questions About the Fast CT Exam

Who needs the test?

Calcium scoring is recommended only if you are not having symptoms. If you feel that you are at risk, you may have your physician make an appointment to have calcium scoring performed. The "calcium score" is an amalgamation of the calcific deposits found throughout the coronary tree; it provides quantitative evaluation of the extent of plaque burden. In general, the higher the "score," the larger the plaque burden and the higher the risk of cardiac events, like heart attack. For example, a person who scores one-to-ten has minimal plaque and is at low risk, whereas a person whose score is more than 100 has a moderate plaque build up and may need to consider exercise testing to determine any additional risks.

How much does it cost?

Because the test is not performed on people who show outward signs of heart disease, it is generally not covered by insurance. The cost of the calcium scoring test ranges from $300 to $600 on average. Beaufort Memorial’s rate for testing and interpreting results is $350.

Where should you get tested?

The popularity of these tests has risen greatly over the past two years partly due to national media coverage by newspapers, news programs and talk shows, such as Oprah Winfrey, who took the test herself. The result of calcium scoring’s popularity is an increasing number of calcium scoring facilities cropping up in malls and other heavily trafficked areas. While these facilities offer convenience, they can also be very detrimental. Most do not have the team of professionals available to recommend proper treatment options, doctor referrals and other pertinent information needed so that consumers can make informed decisions.

"I compare places that offer in-and-out calcium scoring to fast-food restaurants. You may satisfy your hunger, but it’s generally not the most healthy way to do so," says David Brown, CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital. "We’re one of a few hospitals in the state that offers this test, and we have a network of doctors who can provide all of the care and services a patient needs at all levels of risk."

Is it worth it?

Patients who have taken the fast CT say that their peace of mind after completing the test is invaluable.

"My family has a history of heart disease and several other risk factors. I wanted to know if I was at serious risk. Thankfully, my results did not indicate that I had any signs of calcium build up. Having this information is truly worthwhile," remarks Alice Moss, director of development for Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Detecting the early stages of heart disease is the most important step in prevention. Through technological advancements, the fast CT is making a difference between early deaths and long, productive lives.
