The Blood Alliance at Beaufort Memorial Hospital

What is the HERO Recipient Benefits Plan?

The Blood Alliance (TBA) must charge Beaufort Memorial and other hospitals and medical facilities for collecting, testing and processing the blood and blood products it supplies.

TBA developed HERO—which stands for Helping Everyday Recipients Offset Medical Expenses—to give a portion of its fees back to eligible blood recipients.

Through HERO, TBA provides limited financial assistance to:

  • TBA blood donors who become blood recipients.
  • The immediate families of those donors.
  • Other specifically designated blood recipients.

HERO also helps to encourage the replacement of transfused blood and thus ensure that blood will be always be available when needed.

What are the benefits?

HERO reimburses 20 percent of the total processing fees that TBA charges a hospital for blood supplied.

Which donors are eligible to participate in HERO?

  • Whole blood or apheresis donors (even if their blood donation could not be completed).

Which donors are ineligible?

  • Those disqualified from blood donation by their medical history or physical assessment.
  • Those who make autologous, directed or therapeutic donations.
