Beaufort Memorial
The Need for Continued
Community Support
At a community, not-for-profit hospital
like Beaufort Memorial, every dime goes to providing quality
care. By recruiting only board-certified and board-eligible
doctors, purchasing the latest in diagnostic technology,
and affiliating with national leaders in critical service
lines, we're making the best investments we can by making
sure you have the best outcomes.
The Need for Continued Community Support
- Beaufort Memorial is only not-for-profit hospital between
Savannah and Charleston.
- This
means BMH is the only hospital that treats all patients,
regardless of their ability to pay.
- For-profit hospitals have a dual mission to make enough money to pay dividends to shareholders and to care for patients.
- Not-for-profit hospitals have one mission to give patients the best possible care. All excess revenues are put back into the hospital to improve programs and services.
- BMH has 5-star ratings
in major service lines from HealthGrades, such
as orthopedics/joint replacement, digestive services,
and pulmonary care.
- BMH is
the only hospital in South Carolina with an affiliation
with Duke University Health System.
- All of the doctors at
BMH are required to be Board certified or Board eligible.
- BMH
is fully accredited by The Joint Commission.
- In 2006, BMH
had a total economic impact on Beaufort County of $54
million.
- In 2006. BMH provided over $4.7 million at
cost in uncompensated care*.
- In 2006, BMH received $635,093 from the County
for outpatient indigent care.
- In 2006, BMH provided between $110 and $115
million in economic impact within SC.
*This category
of community benefit comprises charity care provided to
a community’s indigent
population, together with elements of bad debt
expense (which often comprises legitimate charity
care cases) and care provided for which the hospital
receives insufficient payment to cover its costs.
- Beaufort
County Council has asked BMH to continue to provide services
in its inpatient mental health unit, even though the services
are not adequately reimbursed.
- BMH continues to expand services
offered to active duty military and their dependents by
allowing Naval Hospital doctors to deliver
babies and perform orthopedic surgery at BMH, since
the facilities at the Naval Hospital are obsolete.
- BMH ,
through donations to its Foundation, has taken an active
role in prevention and wellness through its innovative,
outreach programs, like:
- Diabetes Care Center—a program recognized
by the American Diabetes Association a being
superior in its services to outpatient diabetic
patients.
- Vascular Health Program—a broad initiative
to monitor patients and members of the community
to ensure that their vascular health needs
are addressed. This
includes cardiovascular, neurovascular, and
peripheral vascular patients.
- Asthma Management Program & Camp Seabreeze—two
programs to educate both adults and children on how
to avoid complications of asthma.
- CHIP Mobile Health Unit—provides scheduled
trips throughout the area to offer the public
free and low-cost screenings.
