Beaufort Memorial
Goal: Enhance Services Through Community Gifts

Beaufort Memorial has forged a true partnership in healthcare with our community. In addition to a fleet of over a hundred volunteers who assist patients and staff in various capacities, community volunteers also oversee the BMH Foundation. The Foundation’s sole mission is to support BMH; all gifts are granted to or managed for the benefit of the hospital’s programs and services to the community. Over the past 18 years, the Foundation has generated more than $20 million in philanthropic support. In 2006, Foundation accomplishments and grants to BMH include the following.
Cancer Care—$3.2 million
The BMH Foundation
provided half the funding needed to build and equip the Keyserling
Cancer Center, bringing much-needed radiation therapy to
area patients. Community donations were responsible for the
vast majority of the $3.2 million granted by the Foundation.
Mental Health Services—$247,000
Recognizing
the need for inpatient mental health services in our community,
the Foundation made it possible for the unit to make needed
renovations and upgrades to its
facilities with a $247,000 grant made possible through
the community-supported Valentine Ball.
Innovative Technology—$250,000
Through
the BMH Foundation, our Orthopedic Care Center acquired a
computer-assisted navigation system to ensure more accurate
placement of artificial joints. This further enhanced our
already outstanding orthopedic program, which was recently
cited by HealthGrades, an independent healthcare quality
ratings company, for being among the best in the nation.
Pharmaceutical
Assistance—$7,500
In 1995, Mrs. Elizabeth Mazarin established
with the BMH Foundation a special fund to purchase medicine
for BMH patients who had no other means of obtaining
their medicine prescribed at discharge. Others have
joined in her continuing support of the Mazarin Pharmaceutical
Assistance Fund. To date, well over 600 patients
have been assisted.
Health Careers Scholarships
Since 2002,
Beaufort Memorial has honored 31 nursing scholarships for
the Associate Degree Nursing (ADN) program, for a total of
$64,800. We currently have three scholarships for a bachelor
of science degree in nursing (BSN), for a total of $27,000.
Wellness
Scholarships—$11,000
The BMH Foundation provided a 3-to-1
match for a $2750 outside grant to provide scholarships
for women with high health risks unable to afford BMH’s
LifeFit Wellness services, increasing the total scholarships
to $11,000.
Asthma Camp
Camp Seabreeze is an annual
weeklong camp for children with asthma. Community contributions
have supported this program since its inception nearly 10
years ago. The camp combines fun with asthma management
education to help children with this chronic
condition learn to live healthy, active lives. The nominal
registration fee is waived for any family who has difficulty
paying it.
