Beaufort Memorial

Goal: Be the Provider of Choice
While Fulfilling Our Charitable Mission

As the only not-for-profit hospital between Savannah and Charleston, BMH sees its mission of improving the health of our community extending beyond those who can pay for services. We work closely with existing organizations and civic leaders to respond to the healthcare needs of special populations that might otherwise be overlooked, not only in Beaufort County, but in outlying counties, as well.

Our not-for-profit status means that rather than paying dividends to stockholders, Beaufort Memorial reinvests all of its proceeds after expenses to improving and expanding services.

Last year, BMH provided over $4.7 million in charity care at cost. Beaufort County provides assistance to offset costs associated with providing indigent care to patients. In 2006, that amount was $635,093.

Healthcare costs continue to rise as new procedures and technology are developed. Although many people are covered under their employers’ health insurance plans or government-sponsored programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, more and more people are finding they do not have adequate coverage. In 2006, nearly 45 million people in the U.S. were without adequate health insurance coverage, and the number continues to rise.

Government-sponsored health insurance programs continue to lower their reimbursements to providers, and as a result, some payments are not adequate enough to cover the cost to provide the care. As part of our mission to provide care to everyone in need, the staff at Beaufort Memorial works with patients to explore payment options. For those who do not qualify for existing programs, BMH has its own financial assistance program.
