BEAUFORT, SC – Beaufort Memorial Hospital is moving its Bluffton pediatric rehabilitation center to new, more kid-friendly quarters and extending hours to offer more access to its physical, occupational and speech therapists.

HealthLink for Children will open Sept. 6 in a newly renovated space at 31 Innovation Dr. off Buckwalter Parkway. The rehab center is currently located in the hospital’s Bluffton Medical Services complex at 7 Arley Way. Following the move, that space will be occupied by Beaufort Memorial Obstetrics & Gynecology Specialists.

“We’re very excited about the new facility,” said Megan Mack, Beaufort Memorial’s outpatient pediatric rehab manager. “We’ve incorporated a Lowcountry wildlife theme and designed the interior with the healing arts in mind to provide a calming space for children.”

Painted in hues of blue and green, each private therapy room has been decorated with the silhouette of a Lowcountry animal, such as a dolphin, alligator, heron and crab.

The facility also features a “swing room” where various types of therapeutic swings are used to help patients work on balance, core strengthening and other treatment objectives. In addition, the room has a dedicated kitchen area for feeding therapy and large open space to set up obstacle courses.

Changes also were made to the lobby to make it a more comfortable and inviting space for visitors.

The center’s new location also offers therapeutic benefits. It’s within easy walking distance of a food market, hardware store and bowling alley where patients can be taken to practice real-life skills and navigation exercises.

“We had the chance to create a facility specifically designed for pediatric patients,” Mack said. “It’s light and bright and configured optimally for pediatric rehabilitation.”

For the convenience of patients and their parents, the rehab center is now open from 8 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

HealthLink for Children treats patients from birth through the age of 21, providing therapy for conditions that range from impaired mobility, balance and coordination to thinking and sensory processing, communication, swallowing disorders and autism. A physician’s referral is required to begin therapy, but free developmental screenings are available by appointment.

Along with the Bluffton facility, HealthLink for Children also has an outpatient rehab center in Beaufort at 989 Ribaut Rd. For more information on any of its services, call (843) 707-8807.
