Our Policy on Billing Discounts and Charity Care
It is our policy to provide financial assistance for patients in need. This assistance will include assisting patients in qualifying for the Medicaid program, the Medically Indigent Assistance Program (inpatients only), or the Hospital-Sponsored Assistance Program. We use federal poverty guidelines as a baseline for determining the amount of assistance we can offer.
Medicaid is South Carolina's aid program by which the federal and state governments share the cost of providing medical care for needy persons who have low income. Medicaid and Medicare are two different programs.? Medicare is a health insurance program for all people age 65 and over or who have received Social Security disability benefits for a minimum of 24 months.
Medically Indigent Assistance Program
The Medically Indigent Assistance Program (MIAP) is a state program designed to assist patients who are admitted to the hospital for services. All inpatients seeking financial assistance with hospital bills will be asked to complete an MIAP application before they can be considered for the Hospital-Sponsored Assistance Program. Patients who do not qualify for MIAP may be considered for the Hospital-Sponsored Assistance Program.
There are situations that may arise that involve patients who have insurance and may not qualify for Medicaid or MIAP. Also, there are situations in which a patient may have financial resources but no health insurance coverage. These patients may qualify for assistance by means of a discount on the balance of their account(s).
Hospital-Sponsored Assistance Program
For outpatient services, patients will be asked to complete the application for financial assistance under the Hospital-Sponsored Assistance Program. Use the links on this page to download a PDF version of this form or complete an online version of the form.
