Governing Our Hospital

We are governed by a nine-member Board of Trustees appointed by the Beaufort County Council. Board members serve rotating terms. Applications to serve on the board are available at the county offices.

Terry Murray (Chair)

Murray

Terry Murray recently retired as CFO of Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority, where she worked from 1992 to 2010. She served on the Broad River Healthcare Board of Directors prior to being named to our board. Her other interests include the Beaufort County Open Land Trust and Historic Beaufort Foundation. She and her husband, David, live in Beaufort.




Patricia Thompson, M.D. (Vice-Chair)

Dr. Patricia A. Thompson graduated cum laude from West Virginia University and from West Virginia University Medical School where she was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha (medical school honor society). She completed her Ob-Gyn residency at MacDonald Women’s Hospital in Cleveland. She is board-certified in Ob-Gyn and practices with Beaufort Memorial Hospital. She is a member of the AMA and the South Carolina Medical Society. She was recently chosen as Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s chief medical information officer to assist in our patient data creation with the upgrade to Meditech 6.0. She and her husband, Dr. Gary Thompson, an anesthesiologist, live in Beaufort.

David L. Tedder, Esq. (Secretary)

David Tedder is a lifelong resident of Beaufort County. He is an attorney in private practice, licensed to practice in South Carolina and federal courts. He attended the College of Charleston, University of Maryland Law School and University of South Carolina Law School. David is the city attorney for Hardeeville. He has served on the Broad River Healthcare Board of Directors. He is a member of the SC Municipal Attorneys Association, serving on its board of directors; the South Carolina County Attorneys Association; and the International Municipal Lawyers Association. He serves on the South Carolina Bar’s House of Delegates, representing the 14th Judicial Circuit. He and his wife, Anne, live on Lady’s Island.

Andrea S. Allen, M.S., LMSW

Allen

Andrea Allen is assistant director and member of the executive team with the Coastal Empire Community Mental Health Center. She directs the Child, Adolescents and Their Families program and provides consultation and training in mental health. A graduate of Tennessee State University in Nashville with a bachelor’s in history, Allen earned her master’s in history there too. She has participated in programs including the Collaborative Organization of Services of Youth (C.O.S.Y.) and Senior Services of Beaufort.


Kathleen "Kathy" Cooper, BSN, RN, CNOR, RNFA

Kathleen “Kathy” Cooper, a certified periOperative nurse, received her Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Nursing from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana. She serves as an interim Operating Room Educator for the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN) and a Nursing Education Consultant/Nurse Planner for the Lowcountry Area Health Education Center (LCAHEC). She and her husband, Mike, live on Spring Island.



William “Bill” Himmelsbach

Bill Himmelsbach brings to the Board of Trustees 36 years of leadership experience in the health care field, mainly with not-for-profit hospitals and multi-hopsital systems, including academic medical centers, around the country. In late 2012 he retired as the president & CEO of the Cardiovascular Research Foundation, a not-for-profit academic research organization based in New York City. He is currently a guest lecturer in the MHA program at MUSC and in the BSN program at USC-Beaufort. He also serves on the advisory boards of two small private health care companies. Mr. Himmelsbach holds a B.A. in labor-management relations from Penn State University and a MPH in health care administration from University of Pittsburgh. He is a fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. He and his wife, Gail, are residents of Spring Island.


David House

House

David House retired from American Express in 2006 after serving as group president for a variety of the company’s global services. An executive there since 1993, he previously held executive positions in sales and marketing with Reebok, Pepsi USA and Procter & Gamble. He is a graduate of the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s in business administration, and completed the Harvard Business School Program for Management Development in 1991. He and his wife, Janice, have moved to Spring Island, and he has served as chairman of Serenoa LLC, a family-owned private equity and venture capital investment company.


Faith L. Polkey, M.D., MPH

Dr. Faith Polkey is a board-certified pediatrician with Beaufort-Jasper-Hampton Comprehensive Health Services, Inc. (BJHCHS, Inc.). After graduating from University of South Carolina with her bachelor’s degree in Biology, she earned her M.D. from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. She then went on to complete a pediatrics residency at Duke University Medical Center and a preventive medicine residency at University of North Carolina. She is the current Chief of Pediatrics at BJHCHS, Inc. She and her husband, Raynard, live in Beaufort.


James Simmons, M.D.

Simmons

Dr. James Simmons is a board-certified pediatrician who received a bachelor’s in biology from Morehouse College. He received his M.D. from the University of Pittsburgh and did his pediatric residency at the University of South Florida. Dr. Simmons has chaired Beaufort Memorial Hospital’s Credentials Committee and is currently assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been in private practice at All Children’s Pediatrics in Beaufort since 2004. He and his wife, Lana, live in Beaufort.
