Digestive (GI) Services

In its 2007 annual rankings of American hospitals, HealthGrades listed BMH has a five-star rated hospital in digestive services, also known as GI services. With their independent healthcare ranking system, HealthGrades found that BMH provides exceptional digestive services by bringing together the diverse specialties involved in evaluating and treating digestive diseases.

How do I know if I need to see a specialist for my digestive issues?
Many digestive problems are managed by primary care physicians who are trained to deal with the most common ailments in cost-effective ways. However, when standard methods are not effective, or when symptoms indicate a more serious condition, a specialist should be considered. Talk to your primary care physician about your options.

What is a Gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterologists help patients by investigating and treating digestive diseases using a variety of methods: change in diet and lifestyles, prescribing special medications, or doing surgery.

About GI surgeries
Many gastroenterologists and digestive surgeons focus primarily on the investigation and management of cancers, which unfortunately are still common in the digestive tract. Surgeries may be performed by using flexible telescopes (endoscopes) passed through the mouth or anus. Endoscopic procedures have replaced many traditional surgical operations. The management of digestive diseases has improved enormously in the last two to three decades, as most surgeries are minimally invasive.
